Happy Veterans Day!
For 101 years, whether in war or peacetime, every November 11th has been dedicated to honor those who served in the U.S. military.
Originally identified as Armistice Day, this day of recognition was used to celebrate the end of World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson’s proclamation of the day expressed gratitude and purpose, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
Today we continue to honor the men and women who served in the Armed Forces defending the country’s freedom and common good. Some serve for a few years while others commit to a full career of service. The call to duty comes with many sacrifices, not only for the service member, but also for their family. From missing a child’s birth to being separated from their families during the holidays, veterans accepted these sacrifices without fanfare or reservation in the name of service to the country. Former U.S. Representative Charles B. Rangel surmised, “Honoring the sacrifices many have made for our country in the name of freedom and democracy is the very foundation of Veterans Day.”
